Every trail has a story.

This one has a door.

Walk through it, if you dare.

Deep in Colorado's San Juan Mountains, two lifelong friends follow an elk trail into the unknown, and step into something that doesn't belong to this world. What follows is a fight for survival in a savage, prehistoric land, and a desperate search to find a way back home.

Thomas Seidel

Thomas Seidel has spent a lifetime on the trails, rivers, and back roads of the American West, hunting elk in the high country, fly fishing for salmon and steelhead from Colorado to Alaska, and flying into places most people only see on a map. Those years outdoors, and the wild country that shaped them, are the ground Lost in Colorado grew out of.

When he's not on a trail or in a drift boat, he's just as likely behind a microphone, guitar in hand. He and his wife split their time between the mountains and the river, usually with a grandson nearby holding his own fishing rod. Lost in Colorado is his debut novel, born from real trails and the question that follows every hunter home: what if you took one wrong turn?

His Story

A Colorado life, one trail at a time.

Follow the path that became the book, from a kid chasing elk trails to an author who never stopped following them.

  1. Young Thomas on the ranch
    Growing up

    Boots before books

Raised on the ranch trails of the West, where a boy learned to read weather and track elk long before he learned to write a sentence.

  2. Hunting party in the snow
    The high country

    Elk camp

Years of elk camps in the San Juans with the same handful of friends, the same cold mornings, and the same trails that would one day become fiction.

  3. Thomas and his wife
    A partner for the trail

    His wife

He met the woman who'd share every mountain and every river with him. Together they've chased sunsets from Colorado to Alaska ever since.

  4. Fishing with his grandson
    Passing it down

    A rod for the grandkids

These days the best trips are the ones with a grandson beside him, knee-deep in a river, learning the same patience the mountains once taught him.

  5. Seaplane on a remote lake
    Chasing further water

    Wheels up

Float planes into backcountry lakes and Alaskan rivers, always in search of the next wild place few people ever see.

  6. Thomas performing with a guitar
    The other trail

    A song and a story

When he's off the mountain, he's usually got a guitar in hand. Music taught him rhythm; the trail gave him the stories to put to it.

  7. Thomas and his wife at a waterfall
    One wrong turn

    The idea takes root

On one more elk trail, deep in the San Juans, a simple question took hold: what if the trail didn't lead where it was supposed to? Lost in Colorado began right there.

  8. Thomas fishing in the mountains
    Today

    Some trails don't lead home

Debut novel in hand, Thomas is still out there most weeks, on a river or a ridge, already tracking the next story.
